Thanksgiving!

I am so excited for Thanksgiving Break. I will finally have time to finish up on studying for the ORELA, and to get a break from homework for at least one week. I was excited to hear that we did get a break, for me I needed it. The course work is a bit tedious I think, but I do understand that it's trying to be ingrained in our minds.
I hope everyone else is excited/ having a good break!

Why I want to be a teacher?

Why would anyone want to be a teacher? All day you are dealing with bratty kids, yelling at you, picking on their peers, and disrespecting you every single day of every single year. So why would I want to be a teacher?

I want to be a teacher because I don't believe any of these myths people say are true. I am working in a school right now and I learn more at my job from the kids then I will ever be able to teach them.

I want to be a teacher because I love to be creative. I want them to realize that I am going to try and stay on the cutting edge of things, and that in order to do these I need their help.

I want to be a teacher because my team is my students. We are going to learn everything together.

I want to be a teacher because their are so many kids in this world that just need someone to listen to them, and I will be that one person they may need.

I want to be a teacher because I remember the best teacher I had ever had and I remember that all she did was correct our work, give us feedback, let us re-do things for full credit, and understood that we were trying. We as students were learning and she was watching.

That is only a few of the reasons that I want to be a teacher. I want to be a mentor for those who need it, and I want to keep myself educated as long as I can. What's the best way to do that? By being involved in education!

philosophy of Education

My philosophy of education consists of mainly my values and beliefs. I believe as a health and P.E. teacher that if I can start teaching students today how to stay healthy then they will be able to follow through with that throughout the whole life. I need to be consistent in how I teach it and be a role model.

I will be teaching students the importance of health and what a healthy lifestyle actually means. In order to do this kids need to learn how to maintain a healthy nutrition and be able to understand the importance of exercise.

My goal is to have my students understand that we need to get started today. Their health today effects their health in 20-30-70 years from now. Let's get these students to start working out TODAY. Let's introduce an apple a day keeps the doctor away TODAY! Too many people are learning theses simple values at a stage in their life that is almost too late.

It is my goal as a teacher to not just teach your child these important life changing choices, but it is my goal for them to continue and implement them in their everyday life choices starting TODAY!

Week 3

I loved the idea of having youtube/teachertube involved into my curriculum. I found some funny videos that pertain to my health class that I will be teaching this next week but my only problem is I can't use it. Why? Because my school filters out anything from teachertube or youtube. Does anyone have any ideas besides placing it onto a flash drive of how to get around this?

It doesn't surprise me reading about cyberbullying. There was going to be a time when this came, I just hope that there is going to be a time, soon, and it will stop. I think as long as most parents try and filter what there kids are doing or what websites it may prevent some of this cyberbullying.

Week 2

Week 1 has come and gone, and week two is already upon us. This class is a bit more stressful then I had expected. Having to learn and guide yourself through everything is extremely challenging. As I understand their is an instructor trying to guide me through this, it has not been as successful for me as I wish it would be. I am going to be optimistic and hope that as this course continues I will be able to take more advantage of it and have an understanding of how technology can be used from home, as we have not yet been exploring the technology that comes within a classroom. Making a web page was the hardest thing yet. The amount of time I had spent on that was not managed on my part very well. I felt the directions were a bit hard to follow, but now that it is over I seem to understand it a little better but not fully.

I hope week two starts become a little easier for me, and I can start learning more and stop being so frustrated.

Using blogs in the classrom

I love the idea of having technology in my classroom. I think having a blog is a great idea as it allows students to ask questions to other students as well as the teacher, while not being on school campus. As Richardson brought to many peoples attention, there are always going to be people who cause conflict and demeanor towards their peers. This could be an issue on blogging, but isn’t this an issue with class discussions? Many students who are older stop speaking out, and if you ask why, there answer can easily be because the things they say are perceived as non-important and a waste of time. I think these are the kids that are going to benefit from technology the most by allowing blogging in their classrooms. They will feel more open and able to communicate behind a closed door.

While previewing Sargent Park school’s website it was an inspiration to look over. I loved that the students were asking each other question with math facts and the teacher was also available to answer questions that their peers may not have been able to. Also navigating their sight you can see where it says “skype” allowing their students to contact there teachers at any time. With this availability the students are going to be learning non stop. Not everybody’s schedules are the same, as many students have after school activities, or the help they can get from home isn’t available when the students need them.

I as a teacher will be providing an internet resource for my students. I hope to get feedback from them and continue to upgrade my technology skills as my students technology skills upgrade. As I am going to be a health teacher, I would love to put together a unit to do with calorie counters, so that many teens can really see how many calories they are imputing compared to the exercise they are participating in. Or I may post a human body that has a game attached to it, having the students label what muscles are where and what they do. This is just a couple thoughts that I hope I will be able to incorporate successfully.

Reaction to my first week:

This week has been nonstop stress for me. As our class has their final project to finish by this weekend for ED 532, and trying to do the amount of work that this online class has provided has been extremely hard for me. One suggestion I can provide would be to look and see if this online course overlaps with a class that is just finishing up and provide a little less work the first week. I don’t think that amount of work is overwhelming if this was the only class you are doing, but having a final project, a speech, a 3-5 page reflection paper and a portfolio to put together on top of this online course has seemed to cause me a bit of stress. I look forward to being able to connect with the information you are going to provide our class and hopefully incorporate it in in the classroom I am currently in.

My first Post!
